I have the same problem,
despite I have successfully installed it all roles with no problem, I have formated the server and reinstall the exchange2007 to join 2003 AD and 2003 exchange and I got the same problem like you have.
any one can help with any information instead of reinstalling the server.

Tried your solution, but I had exchange server 2007 with SP2 in it, so maybe it wat the reason, why the rollup just didn't want to install, saying the version is different or the program is not installed... =(
Got all the updates from microsoft, still the same picture - "the data area passed..."
Any ideas?

The very end of my installation would always fail "unable to start MSExchangeIS", event logs showed "Unable to initialize the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service. Failed to find the working directory parameter from the registry - Error 0x80004005."

Fix for this is outlined in this article: http://www.petri.co.il/errors_after_moving_exchange_stores_to_a_different_disk.htm

You need to use the path C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Mailbox\MDBTEMP

Hi Amit,

So you installed the rollup update and did a full restart? As well as running the setup in modify / uninstall mode after the reset in compatibility mode, you must ensure to "run as administrator" also. This will then install the mailbox role and you should be good to go!

Cheers,
Ken

Hey Ron,

So does your installation not progress after following the steps I talked about? Does it produce the same error or a new error?
